52 BE PREPARED FOR YOUR OPPORTUNITY
For tomorrowâ¦the Lord will do a great miracle.
JOSHUA 3:5 TLB
Be ready when opportunity comes. Luck is the time when preparation and opportunity meet.
ROY D. CHAPIN JR.
People with big dreams often sabotage their success because they are not ready when opportunities present themselves. Contrary to popular opinion, success doesnât depend nearly as much on whom you know or being at the right place at the right time as it does on being ready. We tend to think that weâll get everything in order once our dream happens. The truth is that when weâre prepared for opportunity, God will open the door. Football coach Paul âBearâ Bryant said, âItâs not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win that makes the difference.â
When I had been encouraged to turn my dream into a mental movie, I saw myself as a national sales trainer wearing a red suit, carrying a leather briefcase, flying across the country, and speaking to large audiences. Since I had never done those things, I knew I would have to take steps to be better prepared when the opportunity came. I actually went to a store, tried on all the red suits, and modeled leather briefcases in front of a mirror to get a sense of what it would feel like. I put everything back on the shelf since I couldnât afford to buy them at the time, but told the salesclerk Iâd be back. Then I began preparing my sales team with training programs that would enable them to increase their salesâthe same types of presentations that I dreamed of offering to audiences nationwide in the new position. Eventually, because of the extraordinary results that my team produced, I was given the opportunity to speak at several conferences, which led to getting my dream job. When the phone call came I said, âI knew youâd be calling, and I know where the suit and briefcase are!â Also, I had perfected my sales presentations by practicing them so often in front of my own small sales team that I felt comfortable speaking to larger groups. My preparation was rewarded!
When I eventually started my own speaking company, I dreamed about writing magazine articles that would benefit business people. I decided to devote one entire summer to writing 12 articles, one for each month of the upcoming year, without knowing when or where they would be published. Early in the fall, I got a call from a business magazine asking me if I would consider writing articles for them. You guessed it! What they requested was one per month for the next year. If your dreams suddenly appeared, are you ready? Charles Kingsley said, âHave thy tools ready. God will find thee work.â We tend to think weâll get ready once the dream happens. The truth is the dream will more likely happen once you have everything in place.
Do your homework! Be ready for the dream when God brings it your way.
